recordings:

Every so often I’ll add a scrap from the past or a show just recently played... anywhere from solo piano to purely electronic, and some of the nooks and crannies between.

Every so often I play a live PA set and DJ at the CAoS Nightlife party, which is a weekly event where 1,500 or so people come to hang out in a beautiful natural history museum and aquarium. I play a 4 hour set, so I pull out all the tunes, and jump all over the map stylistically. Take a listen...

I’ve divided it up into 3 parts, since each file is quite large. Either click on the moon to listen, or right click to download.

Never a dull moment! It’s a little over 30 mins. long, so you may want to right click and download.

Fire
Rithma throws out a beat, Nica and I smell something burning in the Rancho Relax-o Studio, literally. She loops a lyrical idea over the groove, and I capture it with a compact camera and do a rough arrangement. This one will be much refined but the flame has been ignited.

Sunday Jam
Sitting around with my former roommate sax player Jeff Magnus, and guitar/bass player Stephen Ethridge, we layered lines and harmonies to create this reggae-ish groove. I added the 2nd part while experimenting with mixing it into a more electronic set, and just got carried away.

All music copyright Alex Kalejs, 2008, 2009, 2010
unless otherwise noted.

We met the first few days of college back in 1994, and stayed playing together for 8 years. From compositional to improvisational to groove, we would play long jams, Medeski Martin & Wood covers, and weird time signatures within a given set.

Hugs the Disco Pig was our mascot. Seen wrapped in Christmas lights, he was rarely forgotten at home when we gigged.

The downloads (click or right-click the text below the above moons):
Chubb Subb- an MMW cover played live @ The Belvedere, c. 2002
Baltimore Wedding Cake- a jazzy composition of mine
Going Before This- a compositional journey by Rick Threadgill, bass player

We had a few basement recording sessions and a couple live shows, and ended up with a bunch of material thanks to recording engineer Todd Wilcox.

These guys had been playing for much time together, so I had the good fortune of stepping into a well-oiled machine... yeeee haw!

3 jams, each about 15 minutes long
(click or right-click the above text by the moons)
